Some people imagine that taking their furry travel companion along means their options will be limited, but don’t fall into that trap! Hiking in the mountains, splashing on the beach, canoeing down a river, or exploring an urban jungle are just some of the endless pet-friendly possibilities!

To make it easy for you to choose a destination, the GoPetFriendly.com team travels full-time, doing “paws-on-the-ground” research, and blogs about the places they visit. Our Favourite Dog-Friendly Destination: The Trentham Estate in Staffordshire

The Trentham Estate in Staffordshire is incredibly popular with dog owners, and it’s our favourite place to visit with Elsa. She loves exploring the gardens and walking around the lake, and we often bump into friends with their dogs so Elsa also has the opportunity to socialise too! The shopping village has a number of dog-friendly shops and cafés and there is even a dedicated pet shop called Doggie Fashions which has an outdoor ‘Doggie Wash’ grooming station. It’s an ideal place to take your dog for a day out!

It’s one thing to travel with pets, but another to travel with multiple pets and kids. From moving states to taking a holiday, our best advice for travelling with pets is along with the essentials don’t forget to pack paper towels and wipes for the car (believe us, you’ll need them) and make sure your pets’ microchips are up-to-date with your current info. Since you’re in transit, pets should have collars with tags that include your cell number.

Above all, embrace your travelling circus. There are bound to be some hilarious and some not-so-funny moments. Just keep your sense of humour and have fun!

Florida. The oldest city in America, St. Augustine, Florida, is also one of the pet-friendliest. St. Augustine was founded as a Spanish settlement in the 1500s. Many of the bed and breakfasts, in historic houses, are pet friendly. We stayed at the St. Francis Inn, with a pet-friendly park across the street. They also have access to nearby St. Augustine Beach, where you can walk your dog on-leash. There are lots of restaurants with patios where dogs can hang out with their humans. You can take your dog on a pub crawl or haunted tour, or take an eco boat tour of the Matanzas Bay, getting up close with dolphins, jellyfish and turtles.

Travelling with a pet is not an easy thing to do, but with careful planning, your trip can go so much more smoothly. The first thing you need is a list of everything you need to take for your pets. Then, check the length of your journey and plan in break stops for your pet so that they can have a drink, food and go to the toilet. Finally, when you get to your destination, you need to set up their sleeping arrangements so they can settle in, stress free, while you unpack your cases. With that all done, both you and your pets can enjoy your holidays together and share some great memories!

If I had any tips for travelling with your pup, it’d be to firstly only travel with them if they can go in cabin. It’s just not worth the risk – or stress, of putting a dog in cargo. Second, always make sure you bring the appropriate attire for where you are going, so that you can fit in with the local culture and environment.

It’s always a good idea to do your research to find out just how “dog friendly” a place is before you go. In my experience, Europe is unbeatable when it comes to dog-friendliness, and especially Italy, where dogs are allowed on trains, in restaurants, and are the overall preferred clientele over humans.

So you’ve decided to share your love of hiking with your dog. It’s a great way to strengthen the bond you and your furry four legged friend.

One favorite hiking spot is Canada’s Ptarmigan Cirque trail in Kananaskis Country, Alberta with its cool running streams and valleys, flowered meadows and breathtaking scenery of the surrounding mountains and, for the challenge seekers, 8000 feet of altitude.

The following tips will make the hiking experience enjoyable for you and your dog. 

Prep your pup.

Warm up for the walk (get them used to carrying their pack)

Have your vet do a checkup to make sure your dog can handle it.

Ensure the hike spot is dog-friendly.

Go during non-peak hours at first if your dog isn’t used to hiking.

Bring essentials: hands-free leash, doggy day pack, food and water, pet first aid kit and collapsible food and water dishes.

Enjoy Mother Nature.

To Dog with Love

From coast to coast to over the pond, we love exploring dog-friendly places with Rocco. In our home state, we never tire of hiking the North Georgia mountains with its bounty of national and state parks with waterfalls, canyons and refreshing swimming holes. Some of our recent trips outside the state include fun beach outings at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Huntington Beach in California. And, we recently returned from a terrific trip to the Lakes Region in Northern Italy, where we enjoyed the dog-friendly hotels, restaurants and plenty of outdoor activities around Lakes Maggiore, Orta, Mergozzo and Como.

Always be prepared when traveling with pets. It’s just like having a baby. When you leave the house, you need to make sure you’ve got everything you might potentially need while you’re out. Food, water, toys, a blanket, and pet-friendly wipes are at the top of my list.

When you’re travelling, your pet will be in a strange place and she’ll be out of her routine. This can affect her behavior. Give her a break if she’s tired or crankier than usual. A little extra love will go a long way toward making your pet feel safe and secure, no matter where you are.
